This historic courthouse, located in the heart of downtown Halifax, is the third courthouse. A c1847 courthouse had replaced the original colonial courthouse. Having been replace in the 1980s by a more modern complex located on the outskirts of the town of Halifax, this building is now used for county offices.

The c1909 courthouse was a three-story, NeoClassical Revival-style building composed of a three-story core, flanked by two-story, flat roofed wings. The structure rests on a high molded stone base and its windows have stone sills and lintels. The heavy dentil and modillion cornice extends along the roofline. The elegant portico is supported by large stone Corinthian columns and has wide dentils. A two-stage octagonal cupola rests atop the shallow mansard roof and has clocks on four sides.

Note the front portico is decorated with three banners commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence which will be celebrated in 2026.
