In 2026, The United States of America will celebrate its semiquincentennial (250th) anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The commemoration period began in 2024 with many activities and projects underway. Check out the following websites which are full of history, events, educational materials.

The Halifax County 250th Commission was formed in 2024 with recommendations from the county commissioners. The chair is Michael Wray and the commission has been involved with many projects and events. It hosted the statewide kickoff to the commemoration period on April 12, 2024, The Historic Halifax State Historic District hosted the state=wide opening of the commemoration period.
A CELEBRATION IN 2026: The annual Halifax Resolves celebration on April 12, 2026 at the annual Halifax Resolves Celebration. There are plans underway for a three-day celebration for the annual event, April 10-12, 2026 with speakers, living history, demonstrations, colonial music, and receptions. The schedule will be posted soon on this website and on the local tourism website: www.visithalifax.com.
The Halifax Resolves of April 12, 1776, was the first documented step by any colony toward independence from England. Delegates representing counties and towns in the colony of NC came together at the 4th Provincial Congress in Halifax and unanimously agreed to direct the three representatives from the colony at the continental congress in Philadelphia to vote for independence from England.
The date is commemorated on the NC State Flag and there is an annual celebration of the Halifax Resolves at the state historic site.
