Friends of Historic Halifax Membership: Effective January 1 to December 31

State-associated, a non-profit organization that was initiated in 2017 as a support group for the State Historic Halifax site. EIN 82-4702120

Mission Statement

  • supports the ongoing efforts to sustain, improve, and equip Historic Halifax to enable living history,
  • promotes pride, economic development, historical appreciation, cultural wellness and a sense of community for Historic Halifax,
  • assists the staff at Historic Halifax in recruiting, recognizing and retaining volunteers, and
  • works cooperatively with the municipalities and community organizations in Halifax County in generating long-term financial support for Historic Halifax.

Funds from membership and other contributions contribute to support for events, lectures, projects, living history, and landscaping at the state historic site.

Halifax played a significant part during the Revolutionary War period and can claim the title of the “Birthplace of American Independence”. In addition, it also carries a designation by the National Park Service as part of the Underground Railroad network. FOHH supports the telling of all the stories, the original Native Americans, the patriots, the African Americans, both freed and enslaved, the people who made significant contributions such as Cornelius Harnett, WR Davie, Joseph Montfort, Andrew Jackson, Curtis Austin, and many others such as the famous horse Sir Archie, the Ram Albemarle, the drafting of the state constitution, Lord Cornwallis, George Washington, Lafayette, John Paul Jones…..come and learn with us.

FOHH PROJECT: CULTURAL LANDSCAPING OF WR DAVIE HOUSE

William Richardson Davie lived in Halifax in his home “Loretta” from 1785 to 1805 during which he practiced law and served as congressman, a NC governor, a diplomat to France, and is recognized as the founder of the first state university, now the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Landscaping plans include flowering trees and bushes, brick pathway, gardens, privacy hedges, and an event space with caterer access.
