Magazine Springs

Magazine Springs was an original natural spring of potable water used by early Native Americans and colonists. It continues today as a sacred location for the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe, one of North Carolina's recognized tribes. Several celebrations are held there during the year. The name was adopted during the Revolutionary War due to a close proximity to a factory (public works) which produced clothing, ironwork, and ammunition. Present stonework at the spring may date from the eighteenth century; the ironwork was added in the 1930s. A replica springhouse was recently constructed near the spring.
