The Owens House, c. 1760

The first owner of this house was John H. Purrington who acquired the property from William R. Davie in 1805. In 1839, it was sold to George W. Owens Sr., a merchant in shoes and leather.

The c. 1760 Owens House is the oldest building in the historic district and has a gambrel roof and a side-passage. It is furnished as the 18th century home of a prosperous Halifax merchant. The roof has three dormer windows across the front and two across the back. The chimneys are double-shouldered but only one is contemporary to the house. The interior of the house features late-Georgian paneling and fireplaces. Source: The Owens House Historical Marker
