Welcome to Historic Halifax

The Friends of Historic Halifax, Incorporated, is a nonprofit, support organization associated with North Carolina State Historic Site of Historic Halifax.

We welcome you to come visit this state historic site, located in Halifax County, conveniently only a few miles off I-95, just south of the Virginia border.

Historic Halifax celebrates the significant events during the Revolutionary War period that happened in the town of Halifax and the contributions that led to the founding of the United States. FIRST IN FREEDOM. The Halifax Resolves of April 12, 1776 was unanimously approved by the 4th Provincial Congress in Halifax and is hailed as the first documented step toward independence from England by any of the American colonies. This date is commemorated on the North Carolina flag. Later that year, the Fifth Provincial Congress met and constructed the first state constitution for North Carolina.

The historic site also celebrates the culture and history of the earliest peoples of this area, Native Americans, now represented by the local Haliwa-Saponi Tribe. Several times a year, the tribe holds ceremonies at a natural water spring located in the historic site that was the original water source for the people. Thirdly, we commemorate the struggles of the African Americans as they endeavored to reach the full promise of freedom for all. The National Park Service has designated the lower end of King Street as it terminates in the Roanoke River as part of the Underground Railroad. Signage along the roadbed tells the story.

The historic site is open Tuesday through Saturday. Visitors can tour the buildings on their own or attend a scheduled tour with a costumed interpreter. Website for the historic site:  Historic Halifax | NC Historic Sites
